Stats

Understanding your character's core statistics in New Dawn.

The Three Primary Stats

Ultima Online uses three primary statistics that define your character's capabilities:

Strength (STR)

Primary Effect: Hit Points and Physical Damage

Formula:

  • Hit Points = Strength

Additional Effects:

  • Carrying capacity (weight limit)
  • Melee weapon damage bonus
  • Required for certain equipment

Recommended for:

  • Warriors (80-100)
  • Archers (80-100)
  • Tanks (100)
  • Mages (45-60)
  • Crafters (70-100)

Dexterity (DEX)

Primary Effect: Stamina and Swing Speed

Formula:

  • Stamina = Dexterity

Additional Effects:

  • Weapon swing speed
  • Faster attacks with higher dex
  • Defense chance (minor)
  • Affects archery significantly

Recommended for:

  • Archers (100)
  • Fencers (80-100)
  • Swordsmen (80-100)
  • Mages (50-80)

Intelligence (INT)

Primary Effect: Mana Pool

Formula:

  • Mana = Intelligence

Additional Effects:

  • Magic spell effectiveness
  • Mana regeneration rate
  • Required for spellcasting

Recommended for:

  • Mages (100-130 with items)
  • Tamers (100-130)
  • Warriors (45-60 for utility)

Stat Distribution

Starting Stats

You begin with 80 stat points to distribute:

Common Starting Distributions:

Build Type STR DEX INT
Warrior 50 20 10
Archer 45 25 10
Mage 10 10 60
Tamer 10 10 60
Crafter 50 20 10

Stat Caps

Individual Stat Cap: 100 (base) Total Stat Cap: 225

Stat Growth

As you play, your stats will naturally increase toward the 225 cap. You can influence which stats grow by "locking" stats.

Stat Locks

Control which stats can increase or decrease:

  • Up Arrow (↑) - Stat can increase
  • Down Arrow (↓) - Stat can decrease to make room
  • Lock (→) - Stat is frozen

Strategy:

  1. Set your primary stats to "up"
  2. Set unwanted stats to "down"
  3. Lock when you reach desired values

Stat Gain

How Stats Increase

Stats gain through skill usage:

  • Strength: Melee combat, mining, lumberjacking
  • Dexterity: Combat (all types), crafting
  • Intelligence: Spellcasting, meditation

Stat Gain Rate

  • Checks happen during related skill usage
  • Higher current stats = slower gains
  • Approaching cap = very slow gains
  • Random chance on successful actions

!!! tip "Efficient Stat Training" - Focus on 2 stats initially - Lock stats at desired levels - Use stat-gaining skills actively - Be patient near stat cap

Secondary Stats

Hit Points (HP)

Formula: HP = Strength

Effects:

  • Your health pool
  • When it reaches 0, you die
  • Can be healed by bandages, spells, potions

Maximum: Base 100 (can be increased with items)

Stamina

Formula: Stamina = Dexterity

Effects:

  • Required for running
  • Special move costs
  • Regenerates over time
  • Lowered by armor weight

Recovery:

  • Passive regeneration (standing/walking)
  • Affected by armor weight
  • Total refresh potions restore instantly

Mana

Formula: Mana = Intelligence

Effects:

  • Required for spellcasting
  • Special abilities cost
  • Regenerates slowly (faster with meditation)

Recovery:

  • Meditation skill (active)
  • Passive regeneration (slow)
  • Total mana refresh potions
  • Spirit speak (if available)

Stat-Based Calculations

Melee Damage

Strength directly affects melee weapon damage:

Base Damage = (Weapon Damage × (STR + 100)) ÷ 200

Higher strength = more damage with melee weapons

Swing Speed

Dexterity affects how fast you attack:

Delay = Base Weapon Speed - (DEX ÷ 25)

Higher dexterity = faster attacks

Spell Damage

Intelligence affects spell power:

Spell Damage = Base Spell Damage × (INT ÷ 100)

Evaluating Intelligence also significantly affects this

Temporary Stat Modifications

Buffs (Positive)

Bless Spell:

  • +10 to all stats temporarily
  • Duration: 2 minutes

Strength Potion:

  • +10-25 Strength
  • Duration: 2 minutes

  • Duration: 2 minutes

Debuffs (Negative)

  • Duration: varies

Equipment Effects

Stat Requirements

Many items require minimum stats:

Heavy Weapons:

  • Heavy Weapons: 50-80 STR
  • Plate Armor: 40-60 STR
  • Spellcasting: Minimum INT for circles

Stat Bonuses

Equipment can provide:

  • +STR items
  • +DEX items
  • +INT items
  • Maximum: Varies by item/server

Stat Requirements

If you don't meet stat requirements, you can't use the item effectively or at all.

Advanced Stat Management

PvP Considerations

Stat Planning Tips

!!! success "Best Practices" 1. Know your build - Plan stat distribution early 2. Lock strategically - Use stat locks wisely 3. Balance survivability - Don't neglect HP 4. Consider equipment - Factor in stat bonuses 5. Leave room to grow - Don't max all stats immediately 6. Test and adjust - Rebalance as needed

Common Mistakes

Don't:

  • Spread stats too evenly
  • Ignore stat locks
  • Forget equipment requirements
  • Max all three stats early
  • Neglect mana (even for warriors)

Do:

  • Focus on 2-3 primary stats
  • Use stat locks effectively
  • Plan for your build
  • Keep stats balanced for your role
  • Adjust based on experience

Stat Resets

Some servers offer stat resets:

  • Stat balls - Complete stat reset
  • Server commands - Check with staff
  • Special items - Server-specific
